Tommy Hearns Appreciation

What with Tommy Hearns induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame over the weekend, why not share a documentary covering some some of the greatest moments in his career? We realize were bordering on a Tommy Hearns cheerleading squad, but come on, the cat was bad.

Alden Shoes

Alden probably make the finest shoes one could hope to own. We’ve spoken quite a bit in the past of our admiration for other shoemakers such as Bass and Loake but Alden is on a whole ‘nother level. Along with that comes a hefty price tag though. The shoes are handmade by second and third generation employees of Alden, in the companies factory in Middleborough, Massachusetts. Most won’t have the cash for a pair, us included, but even a vintage pair is well worth tracking down. The quality quickly pays for itself.

Friday Night Fights time again. We figured with out preview on Pacquaio/Bradley centering around it’s similarities to the showdown between Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, why not feature a Hagler fight? There isn’t ever a bad time for a Hagler fight, cause the cat was a scrapper through and through. Not that he was some no talent, skill lacking bum that was willing to put his body on the line. As you’ll see in his fight with John “The Beast” Mugabi, Marvin had a way to still have a scrap whilst exhibiting his world class boxing ability. Round 6 of this is particularly thrilling. We think you’ll enjoy.

We’re at the weekend again now ain’t we? This tune seems quite a good start to get it kicked off. Jeff Penner, one of our good friends and a collector with no shortage of killer tunes at his disposal, introduced us to this one. Bit odd in that it’s a Coxsone Dodd production but released on the Trojan subsidiary, Blue Cat. Nonetheless, have a great one from For The Suits.

Absolute rocksteady classic from The Sensations with production by way of Winston Riley (RIP). These cats had no shortage of rocksteady gems. Jimmy Riley, Cornell Campbell, Aaron Davis and Buster Riley were the line-up at this point in time. As it turns out the Riley family had no shortage of talent in it, did it? Another group that recorded with all the big names of the day, Duke Reid had a number of big tunes with the. And of course, our man, Bunny Lee put out his share of classic cuts with these lads as well. “Baby Love” is probably their biggest track but you need to track down tunes like “Those Guys”, “Whup Whop Man” and “Right on Time”.

Bradley's Hunger or Pacquaio's Experience?

Marvin Hagler’s 1985 showdown with Tommy “Hitman” Hearns was the defining moment for a fighter who up until that point had been criminally underrated. Hagler had been unbeaten in 9 years at that point, with an incredible number of those victories being the result of kayos. Too put it bluntly, Marvin didn’t fuck around. He was the spirit of a hard luck town like Brockton, Mass personified. The sort of cat who went about his fights as if it were any other job, head down and nose to the grindstone. No complaints and no recognition necessary. He was a hungry fighter hell bent on making a name for himself.
