Well they can't all have started with classics. While this instrumental cut to "Rhythm Hips" is far from terrible, it also doesn't quite stand out in the manner some of the other first cuts really stand out. Even the B side "Action Line" doesn't save this one. Both sides are credited to Eric Barnet but the B side is actually the Versalites. Lucky for us collectors, the label didn't take too long to make up for this lackluster release as pretty quickly solid cuts from the likes of The Melodians and Pat Kelly weren't long in coming. For sheer class nothing on the label beats Pat Kelly's "How Long Will It Take/If It Don't Work out" monster but The Slickers "Ba Ba" backed with Glen Adams "Power Cut" is a close second. The featured single, as well as the Pat Kelly one mentioned, can both be found on the cheap and in great condition for those interested.

Admiral Ken
One of our favorite photos. Admiral Ken unloading his sound. Can’t remember his name now but word has it the lad of the left, in the back of the truck, was a pretty talented boxer. Not hard to imagine. If you happen to know who he is, let us know. Not the worst dressed bunch either are they? Pretty much everything we’re into in one picture.

Celebrate Jamaica's Independence

It’s kind of a big day in Jamaica and the many expatriate Jamaican communities spread around the globe. August 6th, 2012 marks the 50th Anniversary of Jamaican independence. We’ll let Lord Creator break the story of Jamaican independence down to you though. Put on your favorite Jamaican record and have a Red Stripe, it’s the least you can do to celebrate the Independence of a country responsible for so many wonderful things from rocksteady to curry goat.

Absolute rocksteady classic from The Sensations with production by way of Winston Riley (RIP). These cats had no shortage of rocksteady gems. Jimmy Riley, Cornell Campbell, Aaron Davis and Buster Riley were the line-up at this point in time. As it turns out the Riley family had no shortage of talent in it, did it? Another group that recorded with all the big names of the day, Duke Reid had a number of big tunes with the. And of course, our man, Bunny Lee put out his share of classic cuts with these lads as well. “Baby Love” is probably their biggest track but you need to track down tunes like “Those Guys”, “Whup Whop Man” and “Right on Time”.

Great clip of some of Bristol’s West Indian population dancing the rocksteady in 1968. Classic stuff!

Kingstonians on Caltone

To get you a little more excited for that Caltone compilation, here’s one of our favorite tracks on it. Been a top tune for us for awhile now, as is most of the Kingstonians output to be honest. Lovely Jackie Bernard lead vocal accompanied with the great harmony provided by brother Lloyd Bernard and Radcliffe Bryan. Too sweet.

Nice little tune for Sunday evening. Glen Adams doing a bit of a DJ vocal on this Bunny Lee produced track.

It's a Rocksteady Party
It’s been over a month since we’ve last had a working turntable set-up. The experience has been, to say the least, absolutely tortuous. Thankfully the issue has been resolved and we just happened to come across this fabulous LP in a local record store this afternoon. That’s the meaning of the word “destiny”, correct?

"How Long Will It Take" by Pat Kelly

One of our personal favorite reggae tunes by our favorite Jamaican vocalist of all time, the soulful Pat Kelly. You know a guy who was chosen to replace Slim Smith in the Techniques was gonna have to have some talent and Pat sure didn’t disappoint. Big surprise so many of his classic tunes came from working with Bunny Lee, right?
