So here you are again, another Friday crammed into a sweaty club while the reggae beat pumps through speakers as big as mum and dads wardrobe. Bass so loud it is sending waves of sound threw your suit jacket. The smell of Brut and cigarette smoke and stale Red Stripe creating an intoxicating aroma. The three wouldn't seem as though they would be the sort of mixture that you'd happily wake up smelling of tomorrow morning, but that's exactly what you know will happen.

"Neil Armstrong" by the Hippy Boys

We wanted to honor Neil Armstrong, but we were unsure how to do it in our way. A dig through a record box with a faint recollection of possibly owning a track by the Hippy Boys that was titled after the American astronaut and first man to step foot on the moon brought us to this track. Although the impact of the moon landing on society as a whole cannot be understated, we’ve always found it interesting just how excited many Jamaican recording artists seemed to be about it. Just look at the number of skinhead reggae tunes with “Moon” in the title. It’s also been said certain stylistic traits of the astronauts casual wear had an influence on skinhead style. Neil Armstrong is bigger than all that though. Icon is a oft misused phrase nowadays. Mr. Armstrong was one man the word icon was never misused when describing him. Rest in peace.

Salvador Sanchez versus Danny Lopez

It’s been 30 years to the day since one of, if not the, greatest boxer to ever come out of Mexico meteoric rise to the top of the boxing world was tragically cut short. Salvador Sanchez died in a car crash, only 23 years old, with many exciting prospects awaiting him. In his young life he had already managed to reach some of the biggest heights in the sport boasting a 44-1-1 record with 32 kayos and the Featherweight title in his possession. This is the fight which won him the first, and only, title he’d hold before his death. It put him on the map and made him one of the biggest names in the game and may have been his finest moment in the ring. Rest in peace, champ.

Arturo Gatti versus Gabriel Ruelas

One did not go to war with Arturo Gatti. Not if you valued your health, and in a lot of cases, your consciousness. It has been 3 years since Gatti’s death and there ain’t a fight fan alive that doesn’t know his name. The man was one of, if not the, pre-eminent warriors in recent boxing memory. A cat like Gatti was the human embodiment of the world perseverance. No matter of pain and hardship could stop the dude. This fight, from ‘97, was the one which cemented Gatti’s status as one of the baddest dudes around and was also the first of four Fight of the Year honors. Things start getting tasty near the end of the third and kick into high gear for the rest of the fight. Battles like this are what Gatti should be remembered for.

Bert Sugar RIP
On Sunday evening another individual who made up a large part of boxing history passed away. Bert Sugar was a vivacious character with an absolute ravenous appetite for the sweet science. Cigars might be the only thing the cat liked more. Owner of Boxing Illustrated and one time editor of the sports bible, The Ring, Bert output as a writer was enormous. We’d go as far as to say he served as one of the biggest faces of the sport while never participating in the ring. He appeared in countless movies, documentaries and interviews about the sport of boxing. He was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005. Bert’s life was boxing. Although it was not all that held his interest as his output relating to baseball, professional wrestling and even Houdini can attest. But few men have stamped their own legend on the sport, and even fewer yet did so as a journalist. He served, and will continue to serve, as a major inspiration to us. And above all Bert was a character. Not a guy trying to be a character, an honest to god character who lived his life the way he wanted. We can’t possibly sum up all of Bert’s accomplishments, mention all his writing or really give justice to just how important he was to boxing so we’ll leave it at this: we’ll miss ya Bert.

Nineteen years ago today, West Ham United and the country of England lost someone the word icon might have well been created for. The pin we have marking the date of Bobby’s first game for West Ham was proudly displayed today, as it is every other day, but it was a bit more special. Bobby, we love ya. Rest in Peace.
