Weekend Preview: 23/03/12

If there’s one theme running throughout many of the fights going on this weekend, the one which keeps popping up is a need to prove oneself. Whether that is done through continuing a rise to the top of your division, in the case of Diego Magdaleno, or re-establishing yourself as one of the best in your division, in the case of Zab Judah, or simply reminding people you are just as good as you were once thought to be, in the case of James Kirkland, the boxing ring provides no better an opportunity to do so. Life is black and white once you step into that ring. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, you need to stand toe to toe with your opponent if you want to prove yourself. Judges may be able to skew a decision in your favour, but what you cannot have influenced by any other outside factor is what the fans see and the opinions your performance leads them to form about your ability.

Weekend Preview: 10/03/12

Did you check out the video we posted of last year’s fight between Juan Manuel Lopez and Orlando Salido yet? If not, go do that before we even begin. You need to understand how great of a fight that was and that you should be extremely excited for the rematch.

Weekend Preview: 2/24/12

First things first, let’s get something out of the way: we know we made a huge mistake in not providing a weekend preview for last weekends eventful day full of boxing. We dropped the ball in not covering and previewing the Dereck Chisora/Vitali Klitschko, Cloud/Campillo and Williams/Ishida fights. Chisora put in an effort very few would have thought him capable of before the fight, with Vitali beginning to show his age. They can’t all be Bernard Hopkins now can they? Tavoris Cloud certainly stole one from Campillo, another case of ludicrous judging in the State of Texas. While we had it a close fight, the sheer volume of punches and crisp combinations landed by Campillo had him leading on our own scorecard as well as many others. The knockdowns in round one weren’t enough to convince us of a Cloud win, and certainly not by the 116-110 scorecard presented by one judge. Finally, Paul “The Punisher” Williams made a successful comeback with fleeting glimpses of the sort of style which at one time had many fight fans claiming he was one of the most ducked fighters in the sport. Points to Ishida for withstanding a pounding.

Weekend Preview: 4/1/12

Boxing’s back and we couldn’t be more excited. After the normal year end sprint that seems to be happening lately there’s been a real lack of exciting match-ups since the December 17th Super Six finale. Starting this weekend that all changes and there is a eight week stretch of quality fights on either Showtime or HBO.

This Saturday in San Antonio, TX we see WBC Middleweight title holder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. match up with the hard hitting veteran, Marco Antonio Rubio. The undercard on this could easily headline it’s own Boxing After Dark episode as the number five ranked fighter on our pound for pound list, Nonito Donaire steps up in weight to meet Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in Donaire’s first fight in the bantamweight division.
